web-based platform for human rights: the hub

The Hub is an offshoot of Peter Gabriel's human rights activist website, Witness. The concept for both sites is simple: get footage of persons suffering injustice at the hands of corrupt officials, publish the footage on the web and let the global community bring pressure on those who are guilty of the violation.

Witness provides people with cameras, whereas The Hub is providing the global community with a Facebook-meets-YouTube means of public awareness and activism. Solid stuff.

I see this as a wonderful opportunity for Christians to get involved in righting wrongs and serving those who are victims of injustice. A few ideas:

1. Pray, pray, pray. Don't just watch and gawk, but pray about it. Then, act...
2. Does your church conduct "mission trips" with a people group who has recently been victimized? Now you know how to help them the next time you visit the region.
3. Maybe your church doesn't "go" to such places just yet. Perhaps you can lead the charge to bring practical help and the light of the Gospel to a dark place?

Any other ideas?

abby update

Hey, everyone, thanks for praying for our little girl. She is much, much better. Looks like we're out of the woods for this one!

from whence doth all the poo cometh!?

Abby came down with a stomach bug on Sunday afternoon. Since then we've been changing diapers at a ridiculous rate. I was so fortunate to be the one who "discovered" she was sick. Basically, she was eating breakfast in her high chair when all the sudden she burst out screaming. I picked her up and some of her stayed in the high chair. Folks, it was everywhere. And by everywhere I mean I had to sterilize the entire high chair and send her outfit to the Baltimore garbage incinerator. The diaper was superfluous, almost laughable. I had to bathe her immediately because there was even stuff on her face. Don't ask. I have no idea. Thankfully that first incident was by far the worst. Over the next 48 hours we've been subjected to something akin to Chinese water torture (though much messier) of blow-out, scream, change, repeat.

The worst part is the look in her eyes. She looks so sad, hurting and scared; she has no idea why her body isn't working right. So, I just hold her, sing to her, pray to Jesus for her, tell her I love her and kiss her head.

For those of you interested in her health: she hasn't run a fever and isn't vomiting, which I understand is a "best case scenario." Please pray she feels better soon and that mommy and daddy are spared from "something wicked this way cometh."

For my mom and dad: Thank you, thank you, thank you. I know I was not aware of your love and care for me when I subjected you to the same thing years ago, but I'm sure I did more than once and I know that you loved me through it. (Your prayers would be appreciated now!)

And, for all the rest of you, a question of physics: Where does all that poo come from!? I mean seriously. She's just 23 pounds. How could we have filled our garbage can outside already!? Really!? Come on!

BAMA is #1, but can they keep it up?

I must say, as an Alabama Crimson Tide football fan, this has been quite the dream season so far. After watching the team get the stuff beat out of them consistently for the past decade, to see BAMA at the top of the BCS with a 9-0 record is something to relish. But...

...this weekend BAMA faces #16 LSU away. For all intents and purposes, this is the last serious opponent BAMA will face until they meet up with Florida at the SEC Championship game in December. With rumors that Terence Cody (#62) is on the mends and will be back on the field this weekend, I may have to happily admit that my preseason guess that LSU would beat BAMA was wrong. (For the record, I also conceded that BAMA just might beat LSU.)

My friend, Lauren, has similar thoughts on BAMA's amazing rise in the polls and the gravity of this weekend's game in her post "Enjoy it while we can."

Let's hope that I was wrong and that the Tide can roll over the Bulldogs, Tigers (or are they Eagles?) and Gators all the way to the BCS Championship game!
